FROM THE FITTING ROOM

Styling on the fly at Banana Republic. (What goes on in the dressing room…)

Starting with one stand-out suit. Fabulous brocade in camel/mustard shot with metallic and gray.

You should know that designers give us style "suggestions"—in-store, on their sites, in their catalogs. It's a starting point from where I take off and create. Here, I'm deconstructing a brocade suit from their holiday collection. I broke it up into separates and styled it from casual-cozy to cocktail-chic, creating high/low looks for the holidays and beyond.

A word about High / Low dressing. Mixing a more expensive, finer piece with an everyday, low-key one. For example, the designer jacket mixed with the Target tee. (Target maxed out this concept decades ago!) Mixing luxe fabrics and accessories with everyday denim and tees gives us the best of both worlds: the amazing feeling (and look) of luxury fabrics and tailoring with the comfort and ease of cotton, etc.  PLUS, you are guaranteed to have looks that are expressly your own. You make your mark on the outfit, and give it your signature style.

It's much more creative and fun when you break "their rules"!
